Soviet composer from Azerbaijan Republic. People's artist of the USSR (1965). Born into a family of well-known performer of mugham Mashadi Jamil Amirov. He studied at the Baku Conservatoire (in composition classes and Azerbaijani folk music with Hajibekov). In 1942-1945 - artistic Director of the Philharmonic orchestra and Director of the music school in Kirovabad, in 1946-1947 – Baku Symphony orchestra, in 1956-1959 – Director of the Azerbaijan state Opera and ballet theatre, as well as Secretary of The Azerbaijan branch of the Union of composers of the USSR. Creativity of Amirov is marked by genre diversity, organic connection with Azerbaijani folk music. His Opera "Sevil" (1953) based on the piece of the same name by G. Dzhabarly about the emancipation of the Azerbaijani woman. It is the first national lyric-psychological Opera. The symphonic mughams of Amirov "Shur" and "Kurd" had a great significance for the entire musical art of the peoples of the East.
