ATTENHOFER Karl (A-59)

Swiss composer, choral conductor and music teacher. Received his first music lessons from Johann Daniel Elster, who worked in Wettingen. In 1857-1858 he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory as a singer (bass). From 1859 he was a music teacher, choir Director and organist in Muri, then in 1863 in Rapperswil. In 1866 he settled in Zurich, led the city men's choir and other choirs. Since 1896 he was Deputy Director of the Zurich Conservatoire and taught choral singing, conducting and chamber music; among his students, in particular, Otmar Shek. Honorary doctor of the University of Zurich (1889). The author of choral and vocal compositions.
