The Cobbett Medal is awarded annually (except for 1941) by the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the guild of musicians of the City of London with Its history dates back to 1350. The award was established in 1924 and endowed with £50 by Walter Willson Cobbett (1847–1937), an amateur violinist and expert on chamber music who went on to serve as the Company's master in 1928–29. Since then many famous musicians were awarded including Edward Elgar, Arnold Bax, Michael Tippett, Pablo Casals, Arthur Bliss, Leon Goossens, William Walton, John Ireland, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edmund Rubbra, Arthur Benjamin, Yehudi Menuhin, Elizabeth Maconchy, Peter Maxwell Davies, William Bennett and many others.
