27 persons were awarded for outstanding musicianship from 1871 to 1912 by this medal. Violinist Joseph Joachim received Gold medal with his name inscripted on it. 

In 1912 The Philharmonic Society of London became The Royal Philharmonic Society and the medal got another reverse inscription.
