BLAS PARERA (B-88)

1777, Murcia, Spain – 07/01/1840, Mataro, Spain

Spanish composer, author of the music of the Argentine national anthem. Blas Parera studied in Mataró, where he began his musical career singing in the choir of his school and playing the harmony in the convent of the Carmelites of the city. At the age of twenty he emigrated to Argentina and settled in Buenos Aires, where he devoted himself for a time to teaching violin, piano and Lute, while working as an organist in the Church of San Nicolas. Over time he also performed in public playing the violin and harpsichord, and even composed a few tonadillas. His career made an important leap in 1804, when he was appointed director of the orchestra of the Teatro de Porteño; later he was also director of the Teatro Argentino. In 1813 the Argentine government chose a composition of his authorship as music for the national anthem of the country. Blas Parera returned to Spain in 1817 and lived a few years in Barcelona until he settled permanently in Mataró, already retired from his musical activity.
