Lithuanian artist and composer. The founder of professional Lithuanian music, a representative of symbolism. He studied music at the music school of Prince M. Oginsky in Plunga (1889-1893), the Warsaw Institute of Music (1894-1899) and the Leipzig Conservatory (1901-1902). He studied painting at the drawing school of J. Kauzik (1902-1905) and the art school of K. Stabrowski in Warsaw (1905). Member of the World of Art association (since 1911). The themes of many paintings – the world of fairy tales, fantastic visions, mysticism, folk beliefs and superstitions - are closely related to musical creativity. He is the author of the first Lithuanian symphonic poems "The Forest" (1900), "The Sea" (1907), the overture "Kastutis" (1902), cantatas for choir and symphony orchestra "De profundis" (1899), string quartet, works for choir a cappella on the texts of psalms, as well as more than 200 compositions for piano. He has recorded and processed over 60 Lithuanian folk songs. M.K. Ciurlenis is named after the National School of Arts in Vilnius, the only art school in Lithuania with a full 12-year training cycle. Since 1965, a competition named after M.Ciurlenis has been held in Vilnius for performers of academic music on piano and organ.
