GESUALDO Carlo (G-33)

30/03/1566, Venosa, Kingdom of Naples – 08/09/1613, Avellino, Kingdom of Naples

Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza, a composer of madrigals and pieces of sacred music that use a chromatic language not heard again until the late 19th century. He is also known for killing his first wife Donna Maria and her aristocratic lover Fabrizio Carafa, third Duke of Andria and seventh Count of Ruovo upon finding them in flagrante delicto. The evidence that Gesualdo was tortured by guilt for the remainder of his life is considerable, and he may have given expression to it in his music.
